Directions to Tumbledown's Loop Trail

Tumbledown's Loop Trail is on Map 19 B/C1 in the Maine Atlas and Gazetteer

Hiking distance: 1.9 miles to the saddle between the West and East peak. From there we took the Tumbledown Ridge trail to Tumbledown Pond (.6 miles) and then down the Brook Trail. (1.5 miles) We had two cars so one was spotted there and we didn't have to walk back to the Loop trailhead.

To get to Tumbledown Mountain's Loop Trail travel Rt#156 from Wilton to Weld. Continue through Weld Village on Rt# 142. Then take a left onto West Side Road, travel about .5 mile and then bear right onto the Bryon Road. The left would take you to Mt Blue State Park on Lake Webb. In about 3.7 miles you will pass the Trailhead for Tumbledown's Brook trail on the right. There is a big new parking area on the left just a few feet past this trailhead. Continue on for another 1.8 miles and you will see the Trailhead for the Loop trail on the right. There is also a new parking area for the Loop Trail which is on the right just a few feet beyond the trailhead.

The trail just meanders up and down, crosses a small brook a couple of times before getting to a huge boulder. One of the biggest single rocks I've seen. It’s a mile in. Not too far in on the right, maybe a hundred feet off the trail, there is a spider tree. It is quite a sight to see if you can spot it. I haven't read anything about it so not many people see it I guess. A picture is on front page of site. From the boulder the trail gets steep. And it stays steep for the next three tenths of a mile to the Great Ledges. From there it doesn't even look like you've climbed anything. And you have fantastic views of the East and West Peaks of Tumbledown. From there the trail goes down and to the right over some flat ledges and eventually goes down into a gully and then starts to climb. From here it is six tenths of a mile to the saddle between the peaks. It very steep all the way. The cave, Fat Man's Misery, is close to the top. It requires climbing into the cave and out the top to continue on the trail. Once to the saddle, you can go left to the West Peak or right to the East Peak. The east Peak will lead to Tumbledown Pond and other trail to take back. It was strenuous but it was the most fun hike I took all year.
